  13. Folks,
  14. I run the BBS for the Los Angeles Macintosh Group, the primary Southern
  15. California's largest Mac user group. A few days ago we received the following
  16. message on our BBS relating to a news story that appeared in last weeks Los
  17. Angeles Times.

  20. Earlier this week here in Los Angeles, 39 year old Michael Cortez was murdered
  21. by three thugs who tried to steal his PowerBook.  The Associated Press reports
  22. that Cortez became "hooked" on computers three years ago after attending a
  23. computer science class at Los Angeles City College. At the time of his murder,
  24. Cortez was working at a law office because it gave him more opportunities to be
  25. around  computers.

  27. According to LAPD investigators, three men dressed in "gang-type" clothing
  28. approached Cortez and demanded his PowerBook.  Cortez clutched the computer to
  29. his body and refused.  One of the men shot him in the chest.  About an hour
  30. later, Cortez died at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan near the Westlake
  31. District in a high crime area just west of downtown Los Angeles (the same one
  32. where Robert Kennedy died in 1968).

  34. The robbers escaped without taking the PowerBook.

  36. Cortez leaves his wife and twin 10-year old sons.

  58. Our User Group's Board of Directors is authorizing a donation on behalf of the
  59. LAMG to Michael Cortez's family, and I'm circulating this memo to other User
  60. Groups and BBS's in hope that they will respond to it in kind.

  62. It's my sincere hope that the facts surrounding this tragedy, coming as it does
  63. so close to the Christmas holidays, might touch your all hearts in the same way
  64. they have ours here at the LAMG. I don't think there's anything any of us could
  65. ever do to replace Michael for his family - Senseless tragedies such as this
  66. one seem to be all too common these days.
