- Folks,
- I run the BBS for the Los Angeles Macintosh Group, the primary Southern
- California's largest Mac user group. A few days ago we received the following
- message on our BBS relating to a news story that appeared in last weeks Los
- Angeles Times.
-
- =============================================================
- Earlier this week here in Los Angeles, 39 year old Michael Cortez was murdered
- by three thugs who tried to steal his PowerBook. The Associated Press reports
- that Cortez became "hooked" on computers three years ago after attending a
- computer science class at Los Angeles City College. At the time of his murder,
- Cortez was working at a law office because it gave him more opportunities to be
- around computers.
-
- According to LAPD investigators, three men dressed in "gang-type" clothing
- approached Cortez and demanded his PowerBook. Cortez clutched the computer to
- his body and refused. One of the men shot him in the chest. About an hour
- later, Cortez died at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan near the Westlake
- District in a high crime area just west of downtown Los Angeles (the same one
- where Robert Kennedy died in 1968).
-
- The robbers escaped without taking the PowerBook.
-
- Cortez leaves his wife and twin 10-year old sons.
-
- If there's any interest in helping his family through the holidays with
- contributions, you can send them in the form of a check or money order to:
-
- Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office
- Victim-Witness Assistance Program
- c/o SAVE
- P.O. Box 349
- Los Angeles, CA 90053-349
-
- SAVE is the acronym for Special Assistance to Victims in Emergencies. In the
- memo section of your check please note that the contribution is for the family
- of Michael Cortez. If you have any questions you can call Herman Millholland
- or Arturo Perez at the DA's office at (213) 893-0336.
-
- Thanks very, very much for caring.

-
- Our User Group's Board of Directors is authorizing a donation on behalf of the
- LAMG to Michael Cortez's family, and I'm circulating this memo to other User
- Groups and BBS's in hope that they will respond to it in kind.
-
- It's my sincere hope that the facts surrounding this tragedy, coming as it does
- so close to the Christmas holidays, might touch your all hearts in the same way
- they have ours here at the LAMG. I don't think there's anything any of us could
- ever do to replace Michael for his family - Senseless tragedies such as this
- one seem to be all too common these days.
-
- This all being said, if any of you might be able to make a contribution to the
- cause, I'm sure it would be appreciated...
-
- Thanks so much for your time and consideration in this matter.
-
- Very truly yours,
- Reed Hutchinson
